EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
