"When are you chatting with the Haim sisters?" a text reads. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their fourth member."
There's just a single issue: The author likewise desires to be Haim's additional sibling. What's more, we are not alone. Multiple celebrated supporters have also begged for the position.
It's clear a special quality is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award contenders.
In the tradition of the greatest ensembles, they're a close trio. Their videos repeatedly feature them marching in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such boundless happiness you inevitably think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."
"The amount of times on tour that fans told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a guitar'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the ultimate honour. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate people to form a group."
"So all is invited to be the fourth part of the family."
Award Milestone
The band have called into a break, where they're resting up after an major tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.
They're right now reeling from the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the very first female band ever in consideration for the prize.
"I watch the announcements every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"
The weight of the accolade resonates with the trio.
"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major milestone," adds Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the pioneers that paved the way."
Heartbreak and Candor
The record came out of a period of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that odd transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to let go.
The lyrics detail breakups and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in the moment who they aspire to be.
"I love description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to actively work on shutting out the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."
Development of Style
That newfound resilience demanded a fresh approach – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.
For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drums.
"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.
"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."
Stories and Shared Camaraderie
The trio's openness shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their dating tales.
A former partner left Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.
"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."
A Confident Path
One can easily sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their position in the music world.
They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an worldwide fan base.
Yet the band will always be their top priority.
"My sisters and I have been making music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still kicking."
