Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
